New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
