The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
